Greetings from the farm! It's been a long time since we published a blog, a LONG time! We've been extremely busy with our new endeavor, The Hungry Diner which has been such an amazing journey thus far. Standing up to what's going on in the world of big agriculture is tough sometimes, in fact, standing up to what's right is almost always difficult, especially in the case of cheap food. At the Diner and on the farm, we work tirelessly to avoid being just another farm or just another eatery supporting the broken agriculture system. We stand for change.
Chris and I started farming out of a love for feeding our bodies well and for supporting the agrarian landscape here where we were raised. Our passion is still strong and starting this restaurant has been the culmination of many years of hard work and dedication to our mission to bring our community healthier, local choices when it comes to animal protein. We thank you for supporting this mission and if you haven't checked out The Hungry Diner yet, be sure to go, we think you'll love it!
So what's been happening on the farm lately? The farm is doing well and we have Travis and Tina to thank for their dedication to this place while we've been busy with the restaurant. Travis and Tina have been with us for quite some time now, this is their third season on the farm, and we couldn't be happier to have them with us. The young couple is almost always in the store on Saturdays so be sure to say hello to them when you see them.
January is conference time and we're bringing Travis and Tina to the Vermont Grazing and Livestock Conferencein Fairlee, Vermont. We've been attending this conference since we first started farming twelve years ago and always look forward to seeing the farmers we've befriended over the years. Continuing education is so important and these conferences always get out motivation up and our creative juices flowing. We hope to garner many new ideas and meet new people this weekend so stay tuned for an update!
The animals are doing well despite that extreme cold snap that we endured. Our cattle are busy keeping their weight consistent munching on hay. Our laying hens are still laying beautiful eggs with brilliant yolks. The chickens have a pretty great winter home in one of our high tunnels, complete with a living floor (fresh mulch added regularly) so they still have access to bugs and such and get to peck and scratch to their hearts' content. We like to add suet from our grass-fed cattle in the winter for added protein and the birds absolutely love it. The pigs also have a high tunnel that they go in and out of happily playing in the snow or the mulch inside. The warmth that the high tunnels provide is so important to keeping the animals happy and healthy during the cold winters in New England.
Our Farm Store is fully stocked with all of our delicious meats, eggs, jams, maple syrup and more. We're open every Saturday and Travis and Tina are usually there to greet you with a smile. Thanks again for all of your support and we hope to see you at the farm or at the diner!
